When we started making this film we thought that we needed an angle rather than just to tell the Genesis Story from beginning up to the present day. It was when we were doing research for the project that we discovered that originally the group had seen themselves purely as songwriters, and had no intention of ever releasing or recording their songs. They were hoping that they would be recorded by other artists. It was only when they found ‘no takers’ that they became ‘Genesis’ a recording and touring entity. At the time of making the film the group had broken up, but during filming, the line up that had recorded their most successful albums suggested that they get together and play some stripped down versions of their songs. It was when we heard the songs in this stripped down format that we could see that underneath the elaborate musical settings, the songs were quite traditional in their structure, and at the forefront of their writing were the lyrics and the melodies.
